Creative Assembly, the developers behind Total War: Three Kingdoms has recently announced that it would be ending support for the game. This announcement came last Thursday, May 27th and noted that work for Three Kingdoms’ content and DLC is now wrapped up, allowing the developer to pivotto a new game in the works. The new title is planned to be an addition to their Three Kingdoms universe, which means the studio is not stopping with just their original strategy game, Total War: Three Kingdoms, that was released two years ago. The new game will be a big change, marking the developers’ move into a standalone unit within the Historical Total War sphere.
A New Game on the Horizon
While any new content and additions for Total War: Three Kingdoms ends with the release of the Fates Divided expansion, a new project based on the Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel is in the works. On Creative Assembly’s developer blog, they revealed their new direction and take. Lulu Zang, Associate Art Director of the team working on Three Kingdoms, says that this new game is, “Giving us a fresh opportunity to build on this world.” Jack Lusted, Game Director on the team, also said, “It’s now our time to turn our attention to a new project in this amazing, historic tale.” With the new project, the team at Creative Assembly is planning on expanding the universe of Three Kingdoms.
What exactly this new game will be is a mystery for now, with Lulu saying that the studio will share more on the progress of the game when they are able to. However, the studio did tease that it is, “Increasing [their] focus on the novel’s rich cast of characters and their individual and unique narrative, taking the core of what made Total War: Three Kingdoms so special and pushing it further.” In time, Creative Assembly will reveal more about the upcoming installment. With the news of the studio’s end of content for Total War: Three Kingdoms, they released a final major patch for the game. The 1.71 update provides numerous community-requested fixes with changes to the campaign map, marking the very last updates and changes to be in the game.
Creative Assembly and Future Projects
As development continues on with the next Three Kingdoms installment, Creative Assembly and its historical strategy games still remain popular among gamers. Ever since the first historical strategy game Shogun: Total War released in 2000, the developer has continued to contribute to the market and historical genre of games. Three Kingdoms has given the studio a chance to create a standalone team within the historical Total War umbrella. This will allow them to have the team to produce Three Kingdoms content alongside other historical projects in the works. With these projects and changes, Creative Assembly’s historical games, all from vastly different eras in history, have become an important staple in gaming among many other titles that surround the historical gaming landscape.
