After several rumors, leaks, and fan speculation, Ubisoft formally announced that the next installment in its long-running flagship franchise is going to be Assassin’s Creed Infinity. The newest entry into the Assassin’s Creed series will be vastly different as, instead of a standard single-player experience, Infinity will be an online live service in the same realm of games like Fortnite, GTA Online, and Call of Duty: Warzone.
While every other Assassin’s Creed game has been single-player, story-driven, and set during one historical time period, Infinity will skirt around the norm. Players will be able to interact with one another and traverse multiple historical settings within the single game. Additionally, since the title will be an ongoing online service, players can expect frequent updates that will add new features, new historical periods, and improve the game’s overall quality of life.
The Future of the Series
Fan reception has been somewhat mixed for Infinity, with many players questioning Ubisoft’s reason for creating an online service-based game. In their announcement, Ubisoft also seemed to hint that Infinity would be somewhat of a permanent replacement for the Assassin’s Creed’s standard single-player entries, with the new game being an “evolution” for the series.
Ubisoft Montreal’s managing director Natalie Bouchard stated that “rather than continuing to pass the baton from game to game, we profoundly believe that this is an opportunity for one of Ubisoft’s most beloved franchises to evolve in a more integrated and collaborative manner…” This strongly suggests that Infinity will not only be an additional entry into the series, but also a replacement for future mainline games, with no plans for future standalone experiences. This is all speculation, however, as only time will tell what exactly series fans are in store for.
Which Historical Time Periods Will It Feature?
With Infinity set to feature multiple historical periods, it will be interesting to see which ones we’ll traverse. We still don’t know how many timelines will be featured within the title, let alone how many will be available for players on day-one. We could wind up seeing a return to historical settings already featured in previous games, such as 15th century Italy from the Ezio trilogy or the Caribbean from Black Flag.
Or perhaps the game could finally feature some of the historical periods that fans have been requesting for years, including Feudal Japan or Medieval England. There are still plenty of historical periods that have yet be explored (and a few settings that could be better explored) and Infinity could be the perfect way for several underused eras to finally get their much-deserved time in the spotlight.
Not Much Is Known
Not many concrete details are known about Infinity, including gameplay, the official name, and any sort of launch window. Stay tuned for future updates on both Assassin’s Creed Infinity and other Assassin’s Creed-related news.
